History of MindArk
– From Project Entropia to a Virtual Economy
Introduction
MindArk’s story is one of early vision, technical ambition, and the persistent dream of creating a virtual universe where gameplay and real-world finance intertwine. Since its foundation in the late 1990s, the Gothenburg-based company
has remained a pioneering force in the Real Cash Economy (RCE) MMO space.
This page explores the timeline and turning points in MindArk’s history – from the first code lines of Project Entropia, to the complex, multi-planet structure of Entropia Universe today.
Timeline of Key Events
1999–2002: Conception and Development
Founding Years: MindArk PE AB was founded in Sweden in the late 1990s. The “PE” stands for Project Entropia, the original title of the game under development.
Vision: The founders envisioned a persistent online universe where players could earn, spend, and even withdraw real-world money.
Development: Work began on a proprietary engine, with inspiration from games like Ultima Online and EverQuest, but with a focus on economic depth.
2003: Launch of Project Entropia
Public Release: Project Entropia launched as an open beta in early 2003.
PED Introduced: The Project Entropia Dollar (PED) was tied to the US Dollar at a fixed rate of 10 PED = 1 USD – a system that remains in place today.
Free-to-play Model: One of the first games to use a free-to-download, no-subscription model with monetisation through microtransactions and deposits.
2004–2007: Growth and Headlines
Media Attention: The sale of virtual real estate for real money began attracting global headlines.
- In 2004, Club NEVERDIE was purchased for USD $100,000 by Jon “NEVERDIE” Jacobs.
- In 2007, a virtual banking licence was auctioned by MindArk, attracting serious investor interest.
Stable Expansion: The game continued to grow, both in content and in economic depth, while remaining under the Project Entropia name.
2009: Transition to Entropia Universe and Planet Partner Model
Rebranding: The game transitioned from Project Entropia to Entropia Universe to reflect its expanding scope.
Planet Partner Programme: A new model allowed external studios to design and operate their own themed planets using MindArk’s platform.
Planet Calypso: Became the default home planet and was officially launched under its own identity.
2010–2015: Planetary Expansion and Challenges
New Planets: Several new planets were introduced by third-party developers, including:
- ROCKtropia by Neverdie Studios
- Arkadia by Arkadia Studios
- Next Island and Planet Cyrene
Struggles: Not all partners succeeded. Some projects (e.g. Planet Michael, Theryon Wars) were cancelled or shelved. Financial and content delivery issues affected others.
Community Impact: Despite challenges, this period marked a golden age of content growth and community engagement.
2016–2020: Stabilisation and Iteration
Focus on Core Systems: MindArk invested in refining gameplay systems – crafting, missions, and item balancing.
Content Updates: A slower pace of updates and fewer new planets emerged, but technical stability improved.
Community Concerns: Some veteran players raised concerns about communication, loot balancing, and the long wait for a new engine.
2021–Present: Unreal Engine Era
Unreal Engine 5 Announcement: In 2021, MindArk announced a full transition from CryEngine 2 to Unreal Engine 5, with the aim of modernising the game and attracting a new player base.
Ongoing Development: Screenshots and test environments have been teased, though no fixed launch date has been confirmed.
Vision Renewed: The future of Entropia Universe is being actively developed, with a new focus on graphics, interface design, and enhanced gameplay mechanics.
